Probably not.īut those in the latter camp view happiness as a stage to reach. Our genetics and environment shape so much of our lives. To people in the former camp being happy is mostly passive. Framing the question is as important as answering it. This logic sounds like cliche, but we need such elastic band-like premise to parse a nuanced question. We should start our answer with "things fall in some type of spectrum", so happiness is neither entirely determined by fate nor entirely defined by our actions (though one's faith may say otherwise). Is happiness an inherent quality or a state of mind? Outcomes in life may depend a lot on your outlook.
